| Week One - March 2003 The link to this week's lesson: Making Candles in PSP. The Assignment: Following MrEighties' tutorial, design your own candle. Here are some ideas to get you started: First, be sure to read the log from Thursday's class as it contains great ideas for you to try. For you animation buffs out there, feel free to try animations. Experiment with other effects and/or filters and show us your masterpiece. Please do not post any images larger than 300 x 300 pixels. Please include a short description of anything you may have done differently. |

After making the candle per the tutorial, I made an elliptical selection in the top, floated the selection and mirrored it so that it would appear as if the candle had been burning awhile. I gray-scaled the candle (but not the flame and wick) before colorizing. The glow was achieved using PSP's Illumination effects: Sunburst in pale yellow on a black background set to screen. For the reflection on the shiny surface, I duplicated and flipped the candle layer and softly erased parts of it to make it blend in nicely - also lowered the opacity on that layer. The small drip (which is barely visible) was done using EC4000 drip applied to a selection and then smudged in to blend better. The background behind the candle is a glass distortion technique that can be applied to any texture or photo. If you are experimenting with PSP 8 beta and would like the script that does this effect, please feel free to download it. Place it in your Trusted Scripts directory, open a copy of a picture and run the script. |
